When Christmas arrives in Paris, the city seems like a magic winter wonderland. Streets are alight with a soft glow of Christmas lights and department store windows are alive with Christmas decorations and festive scenes. Walking down the Champs-Elysée in December is one of the best Christmas activities in Paris.
Another great activity is visiting the Christmas markets. Originally influenced by German presence in France during certain times in history, the markets offer similar products to the German markets. But of course the local products are French and draw on French traditions. You can find mulled wine, gingerbread and specialty treats from various regions of France. In Paris the main markets are found on the Champs-Elysée, at La Défense and at Trocadero.
The market at Place de la Trocadero also has an ice rink. It is a popular winter activity for people of all ages and can be enjoyed all over the city during the winter months. One of the most impressive locations is on the first level of the Eiffel Tower. The ice rink is free admission but you will need a ticket up the tower, so make sure it is a lovely clear day.
But it isn’t to be forgotten, that it is in fact winter and sometimes the cold isn’t so inviting. So with religion aside, the Notre Dame Cathedral is a warm, calming place to relax on Christmas Eve to take in the beautiful architecture and remember you own reasons for loving Christmas in Paris.
